Dexter cattle are sometimes described as the Longhorns of the British Isles. The cattle were thought
to have originated in Ireland in the 1600’s about the time that the civil war in the British Isles caused a lot of disruption.
The cattle escaped from landowners and may have reverted to the Dexter type as they lived in the wild much like the Longhorn
breed developed on its own. By the 19th Century the breed was well recognized and was introduced into the United States
early in the 20th Century.
